How to prepare and publish on the web photos from vacations, conferences and other events?

First of all, forget about the photos at fullHD resolution (1980x1080 or 1620x1080 or similar). That was good 20 years ago, maybe even 10 years ago, but not nowadays.

At a minimum you should publish the photos at 4k resolution. This is 3840x2160 pixels for the photos of the width to height ratio 16:9, 3240x2160 pixels for the photos of the width to height ratio 3:2 and 2160x2160 pixels for the photos of the width to height ratio 1:1.

Why exactly at 4k resolution? Because 4k is becoming the most popular resolution. In a few years no-one will use a display of less than 4k resolution. FullHD photo and 4k photo on 4k monitors are like night and day.

However, optimally you should publish the photos in two resolutions: 4k and 8k and provide the user by default with the resolution corresponding to his monitor resolution. The 8k photos have size 7680x4320 or 6480x4320 or 4320x4320.

Why exactly at 4k and 8k resolution? Because 8k will be the most popular resolution next several years. Smaller photos load faster, so detect with JavaScript or similar technology the browser window width and load the photo of the appropriate size.

Why not for example 3000x2000 or 3300x2200? Because users use different font sizes and browser scaling, so the photos are rarely displayed at the original size and each rescaling causes loss of sharpness. However, when the photo height is the same as the monitor height or when the photo width is the same as the monitor width, it can be easily scaled into 1:1 scale (by pressing F11) and thus be looked at without any quality degradation.

And what about 16k? Looking at the photo as a whole it is very difficult or even impossible to spot the difference between 8k and 16k resolution. For that reason, I think, 16k resolution will not become popular for technical reasons even if in the future will be technically feasible at low cost. In the case, that the resolution will become popular for marketing reasons, the user will not be able to tell the difference between 8k and 16k photo. Nowadays, 8k photo can be taken with most cameras. A reasonable quality 16k photo can be taken with only a few expensive cameras. Other option is to compose the photo from several photos or up-scale it (hyper-resolution). However, both of these technologies are complex and not mature these days. To sum up: obtaining a 16k photo is a time-consuming process, the results are in many cases not as expected and the difference between 8k and 16k photo is most frequently undiscernible.
